For 100+ years, originally from the Hokkien coastline of the mainland, at the turn of the 19th century toward the demise of the Qing Dynasty and the emergence of Republic of China, this melody arrived at Taiwan along with the immigrants. In the old days of modern China, thoughts of revealing affection toward the male gender by young ladies were unsaid and unexpressed, in words and in print, or the maidens would be considered loose and low-class. It was not until a scholar of Tainan (South of Taiwan) 許丙丁 filling in the lyrics in 1960, using the Jasmine flowers blooming in the month of June to depict the forlorn and lonely hearts of young maidens whose blossoming beauties were yet to be discovered by eligible young men , due to its tenderness and elegance, the song then gained popularity and was and still is considered a local Taiwanese folk song.

There are however many people of Hokkein origin. All the songs sung by Teresa Teng in this dialect are considered Min-nan/Hokkien rather than Taiwanese per se.
